ACTIVE LIVING AND LEISURE

ABOUT THE PROGRAM

This is the program for those in need of adapted education. The program has a capacity for eight students, and is meant for those who eventually want to move into their own home. Here, you will have your own room in the dormitory, so you can practice being independent and on your own. The program includes subjects such as health and nutrition, laundry and cleaning, personal finance, sports and games, outdoor life, cooking, arts and crafts, social media, building friendships and active leisure.

Development and Physical Activity

Here at Valdres Folkehøgskole, we want to help you develop new sides of yourself in a community of young people. We also focus on outdoor activities in nature. Therefore, it’s great if you enjoy hiking and skiing in the forest, fields and mountains. Physical activity and personal achievement are core parts of the program, with opportunities for activities such as cycling, swimming, climbing, snow cave hiking, skiing and horseback riding.
The students will participate in Ridderrennet at Beitostølen, as well as joint trips together with the rest of the school. In addition, they will have their own study trip to Europe.

New Friends

This year, you will become part of a large community, which will give you confidence and improve your social skills. You will make new friends, face new challenges, become more independent and participate in electives together with the other students.
You will also receive personal support from one of the program instructors.

Educational Approach

Valdres Folkehøgskole has extensive experience with inclusion and independent living for students with disabilities. We believe that diversity is a valuable thing and a source of mutual understanding.

The students will participate in electives, some core subjects, meals and social activities in the evenings. They will also be part of a bustling environment with 140 young people, and we place great emphasis on participation and personal achievement. Sharing these spaces together creates acceptance and joy in diversity. This model creates a living space for everyone and facilitates involvement, which is a beautiful thing to be a part of.

The Staff

We have teachers and staff with long experience and the necessary expertise. In addition, we believe that seeing and understanding our students is perhaps the most important part of fostering growth and independence.

Statement from Cecilie Willoch, mother:

My son Philip, who has special needs, attended Valdres Folkehøgskole from 2016-2017. He says he had an amazing year.

As a mother, I should add that I have seldom seen such willingness and ability to work together and make everyone feel like one big group. My son had an unforgettable year thanks to his teachers, assistants and fellow students.

Students in this program can apply to NAV for educational funds. The National Insurance Act states the following:

  • 10-6. Support for the improvement of functional ability in daily life.

"When a member has had their functional ability in daily life significantly and permanently impaired due to illness, injury or disability, support shall be provided pursuant to paragraph 10-7.

Support shall be provided in connection with measures that are necessary and appropriate to improve the member's functional ability in daily life or to enable them to receive care in their home."

  • 10-7. Forms of support

"For a member who meets the conditions of paragraph 10-6, support may also be granted for educational initiatives."

Educational initiatives

Support may be granted for attending a folk high school if such attendance is considered necessary and appropriate as part of the member's development of personal independence to manage daily tasks. Support may be granted for necessary expenses related to boarding and education that exceed the ordinary living expenses at the school.

The student or guardian must apply to NAV, and the application must include:

- Admission letter from the school.

- Professional statement regarding the student's abilities and their need to attend a folk high school. (This may be provided by medical or educational professionals who know the student.) Applicants for this program usually have an individual plan in their home municipality and their own coordinator. The coordinator typically plays a key role in facilitating their attendance at a folk high school.

Applications for the program may be submitted from September 1, and admissions will be made on an ongoing basis until the program is full.

The program requires financial resources from your home municipality, county authority, NAV or similar.
