In the school year 17/18 we supported the project with 562,803,-. In return they give us better insight into how the world works, what everyday life is like for young people in Tanzania and how our involvement helps change lives. We get visits to the school from the leaders in Lushoto and lectures from YWCA-YWCA Global. The Peacemaker Committee in Valdres goes on a study trip to Lushoto every year.

This project invests in the lives of young people. YPM Lushoto is part of the STOP POVERTY campaign of YWCA-YFUM Global. All work done is therefore based on the fundamental values of justice and peace. Through our collaboration with YPM Lushoto, we reach out to young people in three different arenas; Sports work, microfinance (VICOBA) and environment- and civil rights education (S2C and PETS).

  1. We believe that sports are a place to prevent so that young people avoid the difficult everyday life on the streets. Sports build character and bind young people together in a natural way. In this way, sports are a tool that promotes peace and unity in the local community. Through sports, young people can see what talents they have in addition to a health benefit. Trainings are arranged for local teams and larger regional tournaments in football, athletics, cycling. Some young people from the football team travel to the East Africa Cup. There is also an active Ten Sing group.

  2. We support the creation of VICOBA groups (“Village Community Bank”). This is a form of microfinance in small groups. Here you can learn about economics and investment, human rights and political rights. In this way, even the poorest have the opportunity to take out loans and save money.

  3. In Lushoto we also support PETS and the program S2C. S2C (Subject to Citizen) is a program where young people are encouraged to focus on problems in society and be involved in decision-making processes and be involved when matters are decided in society. PETS (“Public Expenditure Tracking System” ) is about providing training in - and how to uncover, counteract and stop corruption. Corruption is unfortunately widespread in Tanzania and causes society to grind to a halt in many ways when community money does not benefit society. For example, money that should have gone to hospitals, education, public buildings, roads, etc.

Since YPM Lushoto also receives support from Norad (the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation), there are strict rules for reporting and documentation of spending. This way we can ensure that our money goes where it is supposed to.

How to contribute?

The Lushoto Project is a project for those of you who want to contribute to a better world. If you would like to contribute money, you can do so in the following ways:

GLOBAL RACE
You can support a student participating in the race at school on October 26, 2019. You do this by sponsoring the student, who will run a lap of 370 meters in 30 minutes. Before running, ask friends/family/companies if they are willing and able to sponsor them for the race. A sponsor can either pay a fixed amount, a certain amount per lap or both. Various prizes will be awarded to the students (most earned, most laps, best class/group, best idea/costume). In addition, there will be a raffle on the global race day with great prizes (there is the option to pay both via VIPPS and in cash).

Sponsor of the project
You can pay an amount you wish to contribute to account number 3000 17 16766 or on VIPPS to #121746.

As a student, you will have the opportunity to learn about aid work, work in a team, receive leadership training and create happenings. Maybe you will also have the opportunity to take an extra trip to Lushoto, Tanzania? If you are interested in this, you are a perfect fit to become a volunteer in the Lushoto project at Valdres Folkehøgskole.

All students, regardless of their major, can contribute!

In our project we collaborate with KFUK-KFUM Global. This is the sister organization of the world's largest youth organization, YMCA. We dream of starting a folk high school in the mountain town of Lushoto. You as a student can help achieve this!

Who does the money go to?

When you contribute money, either as a sponsor or by making a payment, the money will go entirely to our project in Lushoto. The money goes through YWCA-KFUM Global.
