In the school year 17/18 we supported the project with 562,803,-. In return they give us better insight into how the world works, what everyday life is like for young people in Tanzania and how our involvement helps change lives. We get visits to the school from the leaders in Lushoto and lectures from YWCA-YWCA Global. The Peacemaker Committee in Valdres goes on a study trip to Lushoto every year.
This project invests in the lives of young people. YPM Lushoto is part of the STOP POVERTY campaign of YWCA-YFUM Global. All work done is therefore based on the fundamental values of justice and peace. Through our collaboration with YPM Lushoto, we reach out to young people in three different arenas; Sports work, microfinance (VICOBA) and environment- and civil rights education (S2C and PETS).
-
We believe that sports are a place to prevent so that young people avoid the difficult everyday life on the streets. Sports build character and bind young people together in a natural way. In this way, sports are a tool that promotes peace and unity in the local community. Through sports, young people can see what talents they have in addition to a health benefit. Trainings are arranged for local teams and larger regional tournaments in football, athletics, cycling. Some young people from the football team travel to the East Africa Cup. There is also an active Ten Sing group.
-
We support the creation of VICOBA groups (“Village Community Bank”). This is a form of microfinance in small groups. Here you can learn about economics and investment, human rights and political rights. In this way, even the poorest have the opportunity to take out loans and save money.
-
In Lushoto we also support PETS and the program S2C. S2C (Subject to Citizen) is a program where young people are encouraged to focus on problems in society and be involved in decision-making processes and be involved when matters are decided in society. PETS (“Public Expenditure Tracking System” ) is about providing training in - and how to uncover, counteract and stop corruption. Corruption is unfortunately widespread in Tanzania and causes society to grind to a halt in many ways when community money does not benefit society. For example, money that should have gone to hospitals, education, public buildings, roads, etc.

Since YPM Lushoto also receives support from Norad (the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation), there are strict rules for reporting and documentation of spending. This way we can ensure that our money goes where it is supposed to.
